The people from Humacchuco were the first in this region providing community-based lodging for tourists. Their intention was to find an alternative to the kind of tourism that impedes rural communities from benefiting from tourism activities in their area. The strategic location of Humacchuco right below some of the area's main tourist attractions like the Huascarán (highest mountain of Peru!), Llanganuco Lakes and Lake 69, is the key factor of its success.
Apart from getting to know the local culture and the village surroundings, the project members have developed three eco-trails where visitors can appreciate the variety of natural resources, and gain insight in how these natural resources are sustainably used by the villagers. The project is owned by six community members, who all have a guesthouse specifically built for the purpose.
The community-based tourism project “Huascar y Huandy” offers:
- An unforgettable intercultural experience
- Warm and inviting hostfamilies
- Amazing flora and fauna
- Beautiful hikes in the base of the Andes
